Omega-3 and Cassava Facts

Happy long weekend for those who are in the US as this coming Monday is Memorial Day Holiday. What are you up to? I’m going to hang out with my gals tomorrow lunch as part of our usual monthly gathering and also to celebrate two of our friends’ birthdays Ay and Yen (obviously not their real names).

We decided to do our weekly grocery shopping today, figured the market will be very crowded over the weekend due to the holiday (BBQ party anyone?).

On our way, we stopped by Costco to get some non perishable essentials (I usually don’t shop grocery in bulk since we only have 3 people in the house) and I spotted this
Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil

After manufacturing instant rebate, this cost me about $14.00 (originally $16.00)

Ingredients: Fish oil (100% natural, from wild Alaskan Salmon (softgel (gelatin, glycerin, water), Vitamin E (as D-alpha tocopherol).

Not too shabby huh? I’m not a scientist and have ZERO knowledge of drug composition but overall the ingredient list look pretty clean to me. I also visited the manufacturer, Alaska Protein Recovery website to read more info about them.

Here’s the snippet part of their salmon oil processing:

APR’s brand of wild salmon oil, Pure Alaska Omega, is made using a gentle, natural, low temperature process, in a manner very similar to that used for extraction of extra virgin “cold pressed” olive oil. Our process does not thermally, or otherwise, degrade the many oil soluble micro nutrients or the LC-PUFA’s found naturally in Alaska salmon. Our oil is separated by centrifugation at the earliest stages of our fish hydrolysate production process, immediately after the grinding and heating of the salmon. The separation of the liquid phase from the solid phase of a salmon takes place in a food grade decanter (left). The liquid, which contains water, water-soluble proteins, micronutrients, as well as the oil, is immediately passed through a food grade high speed centrifuge (right) which separates the salmon oil from the water. The oil is immediately packed in sterile 1,000 liter IBC bins.

Suggested use: take 2 softgels a day or take one with breakfast and another one with the last meal of the day.

For that price, I’m pretty happy to get this Omega 3 supplements, since I consume quite a lot of chicken (see my big chicken recipe list?) compare to ruminants like beef, lamb, elk etc, let alone grass fed ones. Getting wild caught fish is pretty tricky as well and majority of fish that are sold around my regular grocery stores are mostly farm raised, which is something that we should avoid at all costs. Besides wild caught fish is darn pricey and they don’t hold my hunger as well compare to other meat.

Ok enough talk about supplements. Let’s move on the the real food :D

Today’s lunch was super yummy big ass salad of spring mix, roasted curried cauliflower and sliced of citrus and spices marinated chicken breasts (I’ll post this recipe next time as this one didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to be although still yummy though), topped with macadamia nuts and with sliced of a whole avocado on the side.

O wait, what about breakfast? Well just a boring one small baked Japanese yam.

And I didn’t workout at all for today. I had a brutal workout yesterday, which left my upper body sore today (thanks to 195 burpees push ups plus another 50 push ups).

But that didn’t stop me for having root vegetables, especially not this yummy Yucca Root Fries!

Believe me, these kept me very full! I don’t think I’m going to have dinner tonight. Gotta give my stomach a little break from processing food :) -Intermittent fasting

Speaking of yucca/cassava, I had an interesting day at the grocery store today. When I was picking up 3 cassavas, this middle age man asking me how to cook those, so basically I just told them the way I usually do it: peel them, cut them into fries shapes, then steam for at least 10 minutes, then bake them (after sprinkling with some salt and avocado oil) for about 20 minutes in 400°F. He then asked me what was the benefit of it? I just blurted out that it was a better carbohydrate choice than bread (LOL). Yeah I know..I’m lame.

But after I got home, I did a little google search and found some facts about cassava and here what I found
1. Cassava (yucca) is very rich in starch, calcium, phosphorus and Vitamin C, but very poor in protein and other nutrient. The leaves, however, are rich in amino acids and protein (Wiki)

2. Cassava is the staple food of Eastern part of Indonesia (Maluku Islands (aka Moluccan Islands) and West Papua)

3. Other than being boiled/fried, cassava can also be made into sweet dishes like Indonesian getuk cake or fermented (tapai)

4. Tapioca pearls (boba), the small balls that usually found in Asian milk tea drinks are made from cassava root.

Have great upcoming weekend everyone!

Do you take fish oil? What’s your favorite brand?
I’ve seen people talking about Cod Liver Oil or Krill Oil but those two are super pricey and currently are out of my budget line.

So Ready for the Weekend

Hmm..not much going on today, except I actually made an effort to prepare hot breakfast for me and Hubby K after I finished my morning workout. (I munched on sweet potato prior cooking)

Fried egg, Costco Chicken Sausage and Trader Joe’s Uncured bacon.

Lunch was whatever left over from yesterday: Oven Fried Curried Chicken Fingers, Braised-to-Oven Fried Chicken Drumsticks and steamed broccoli.

Today’s weather was a bit cooler than yesterday, but that didn’t stop me getting my hands on these!

Aah Full Fat Fage Plain Greek Yogurt…I miss you so much! None of the stores around my neighborhood area carry this (only non fat and 2% fat -BLEH!), so when my co-worker C said she was gonna get her lunch at Albertson’s I instantly tagged along with her. That’s the only grocery store in the area which I usually go (in this case my workplace) carries this product!

Got back home, I cooked the lamb shoulder that I marinated the night before for our dinner. Plus steamed broccoli and lotus root from yesterday. Topped with Trader Joe’s Jose’s Hot Chipotle Salsa (can you believe I almost finished that entire jar???)

I’m soo ready for the weekend!

Speaking of which, I’ve been planning to write a post about what exactly is Paleo/Primal lifestyle/diet in depth rather than mentioning it here and there. I know some people would already familiar with it but I can’t always assume readers know about it, right? Also a post about saturated fat being bad is a myth should be a good one as well. Geez, I gotta research more. Writing a research essay is not really my strong point so that explains a lot why I’ve been procrastinating on it. Wish me luck!

The Consequences

Thank you for all your sweet comments regarding the outfit that I tried/got. :D I know it look a bit weird since I didn’t show my face, but I’m just not confident enough to show my face on the web..haha.

I felt a lot better today thanks to the extra break I took, but my laziness over the weekend came with a high price. I had to run to Costco to restock my protein essentials, or else we’d be starving for the whole week (ok I exaggerate it A LOT, but you got the idea and no I don’t think we wanna live off on eggs for the whole week either) – proof that I undershopped our grocery last weekend..BLAH.

Got these organic boneless chicken thighs, seafood medley (big score) and some fish fillets

Look, another of my new kryptonite – macadamia nuts!! Finally something I could munch on if I got bored hungry in between meals.

I can’t imagine how am I going to hold my mindless snack when the other temptation arrive from Amazon

And I confessed I polished off these banana chips today. God, that thing was super addicting! It satisfied my potato chips craving.

Remember I didn’t do any cooking prep over the weekend? So yeah today after dinner I had to cut and marinate the chicken thighs I got today for tomorrow’s dinner. I am experimenting with my own recipe *fingers crossed* We’ll see how it turns out tomorrow. If it’s good, I’ll share the recipe here and if I didn’t mention anything about it, then you know what happened. :P

But here’s the sneak peek.

Boy, organic chicken thighs were SO SMALL and not plumped up like the conventional ones.

Oh wait, no pic for today’s food? Oh well it’s the similar combo from yesterday’s dinner :)

Tell me, what is your food/snack kryptonite?

In the Pinch

TGIF everyone! I’m sooo glad finally the weekend is here. It’s been raining and cold for the past couple days but I heard the weather will be warming up starting next week. Gosh, I hate this drastic temperature change.

Thank you for all your comments on my last fruity post. It’s always fun to read comments from different perspectives. That’s what makes blogging fun, right? :D

Anyway, I’ve been in a pinch in my meals since yesterday.

Breakfast was nuked 2-4 eggs with some baked sweet potato.

yesterday's bfast - today was pretty similar, just 2 more eggs

Lunch was super blah and I realized I didn’t have any more protein in my fridge (and no I don’t wanna eat more eggs for dinner), so Costco chicken to the rescue!

I seriously need to replicate this so I don’t have to buy from Costco anymore..$4.99+tax? It used to be $3.99+tax. Price just keeps rising up.

And did I mention I missed fish?

I couldn’t find the Alaskan Cod Fillet that I got last time, but saw this one and it was much cheaper ($9.00 vs. $14) so I grabbed it. Do you know what am I going to cook it with?

Of course with shredded coconut – gotta finish those guys so I can order the Coconut Flakes. It’ll be for tomorrow’s lunch so it’s still defrosting in the fridge now.

Today I’ve been feeling sore around my neck area, probably from the overhead press that I did on yesterday’s workout -OUCH. So I decided to take a rest day and do the workout tomorrow. Sometimes I have hard time to take a rest day, because I just have this “guilt” for skipping a workout. The soreness actually isn’t that bad but at the same time I also don’t wanna push myself too much that will worsen the pain.

Btw, I’m having my own “long weekend” as I am taking a day off on Monday. I need a mental break from work and just relaxing at home. I don’t even have any particular plan on that day either. It’s good to just take a day off from regular routine and recharge, don’t you think?

How much is the gas price in your area? It’s creeping up to $4.00 now!! Yikes!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Chickened Out

Aren’t you glad tomorrow is Friday? Because I am! :D
But this Saturday will be a super busy day because it’s my brother’s in Law’s wedding. K and I have to go to his place early morning like 6 am to help out with the preparations. Like any typical Chinese wedding, it usually has this “tea ceremony” thing. I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures for you guys and hopefully I can get the post up by Sunday..haha.

I could imagine that we’ll be out for the whole Saturday, from early morning to late night…*sigh* Not sure how I can stay within my Primal/Paleo eats but I’ll try my best.

Anyway, I finally had my last coconut-apple pudding yesterday as my breakfast, along with left over of Quickie Chicken Curry and some nuked frozen green peas.

Try to dress it up a bit for the pic..haha..btw I ate the other 1/2 banana as well

And when I went to Costco after work to pick up some stuff, I bought this: Premium Alaskan Cod Fillets (wild caught)

total 7 individually vacuum sealed fillets

Currently it’s still defrosting in my fridge. Hopefully it’ll be ok by tomorrow morning so I could season them a bit with salt and pepper and cook them for dinner.

After so many chicken dishes, I think I need a little break from it. Fish sounds so good!

Any exciting plans for this coming weekend? Did I tell you that I still have NO IDEA WHAT TO WEAR for the wedding? ARGH! Gotta dig into my closet and improvise whatever clothing I could mix-match. I might want to wear differently during daytime and nightime (daytime would be the tea ceremony, nightime would be the banquet). It’s been pretty cold lately at night, and usually those party dresses are not warm enough!

Wish me luck!
